Braeside - Isle Of Jura

Information enquiry Booking

Braeside is situated between the sea and the hills above the small village of Craighouse at the south end of small Isles Bay on the beautiful Isle of Jura.

Set in a mature private garden, it is quiet and secluded with superb views of the sea and mountains, yet only fifty yards from the island's main amenities - the shop, post office, hotel (with public and lounge bars and restaurant).

Jura is remote and 'off the beaten track' making life on the island extremely relaxing and stress free - yet transport links, by ferry or plane via Islay, are very good. There is also a summer passenger ferry from Tayvallich which arrives at the old stone pier just a few yards from the house.

The large lounge, which occupies the full width of the house, gives panoramic views of the sea at the front and the hills at the rear. The room, which enjoys both morning and evening sunshine, is well equipped with a leather suite and electric heating providing a comfortable and welcoming environment. Birds are encouraged to visit the feeders near the front window and and a supply of grain is provided! The view to the sea is constantly changing and the regular arrival and departure of yachts in the bay adds to the interest. Amenities in the lounge include large flat-screen colour television, CD player/radio with selection of (mainly classical) CD's.

There are three bedrooms, one double, one twin and one single all with superb views. The kitchen is equipped with electric cooker, automatic washing machine, fridge/freezer, microwave cooker, electric kettle, toaster, pour-on coffee maker, coffee grinder, ample cooking utensils, china and cutlery. The bathroom includes a shower.

Travel to Jura is by Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from Kennacraig, West Loch Tarbert to Port Askaig or Port Ellen on Islay; thence to Jura from Port Askaig. The Calmac ferry to Islay should be booked well in advance - 01880 730253 or on the website www.calmac.co.uk. The ferry from Port Askaig to Jura leaves regularly, with no booking, until approx. 1800hrs. If you intend to use the late Calmac ferry which leaves Kennacraig about 1800 hrs, there is a ferry to Jura at 2130 hrs (tides permitting!), but this must be booked by 12 noon the day before travel - 01496 840681.

About three miles from Braeside, at the north end of Small Isles Bay lie the magnificent Corran sands - a delightful beach well over one mile long. The water shelves very gently making it an ideal beach for children to swim and play. In the other direction, at the south of Jura lies Jura House with its walled gardens which are open to the public.
