Sandcastle Cottage, Crail for family holidays by the sea

Front view of Sandcastle Cottage Crail

Sandcastle Cottage is situated in Nethergate, Crail. Parking is available on-street outside the cottage, and just opposite is the path leading down to Roome Bay play park which is beside the rocky cove of Roome Bay. It's a great place for rock-pooling, so bring your wellies! It's also the place to join the Fife Coastal path, and set off either in the direction of Kingsbarns via Fife Ness and Kilminning Nature Reserve - or via Caiplie and Cellardyke to Anstruther and beyond.

Dining room of Sandcastle Cottage, Crail - we completed the complete refurbishment of Sandcastle Cottage in early 2008.

There is a large table with seats for 6 (I was standing on chair no. 6 to take the photo!). A high-chair is always available too.
If you're thinking about having friends round while visiting Sandcastle Cottage, then there are garden chairs which can be brought in to provide additional seating for your guests.

Garden to the rear of Sandcastle Cottage, Crail

We can't always guarantee that the sky will be as blue as it was on this day! But the garden provides plenty of room for the kids to run about in relative safety and if you take a walk down the garden you'll find a bench where you can rest before making the journey back!! The sun sets in the direction of the large sycamore tree which you can see in the distance, making the patio a good spot to relax with a drink on the long summer evenings.

The kitchen of Sandcastle Cottage was completely renewed in early 2008, and you'll find everything you need there to self-cater.

The village of Crail has a splendid butcher's shop (Penman's) and an excellent greengrocer's (First Fruits) as well as a couple of small convenience stores, a bakers and pharmacy. The local fish van visits on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Once you're here you'll find that you can stroll to the village in the mornings to find excellent fresh local produce for your meals.

The fresh decor and clean lines of the kitchen make it ideal for preparing your meals while at Sandcastle Cottage - a window gives a view of the garden.

Over the years we've owned Sandcastle Cottage (since 1992), we've often entertained friends there so you'll find plenty of crockery and cutlery. The all-essential dishwasher means that you don't have to be a slave to the washing up afterwards.

The light and airy sitting room in Sandcastle Cottage has a pebble and driftwood effect gas fire which makes it extra cosy in the winter months.

After two years of searching we were pleased to find the seascape by Philip Rankin which completes our seaside theme in the living room. We found it at the Jerdan Gallery - one of three galleries in Crail (the other two being the Crail Gallery and the Harbour Gallery). For art lovers there's plenty to see in the village. A visit to Crail pottery is also a 'must' during your stay. The nearby village of Pittenweem (about 7 miles away) has lots of small galleries and a burgeoning Arts Festival held in August each year.

A warm welcome awaits at Sandcastle Cottage, Crail.

Karen at Funky Scottish in Pittenweem painted this lovely welcome plate for Sandcastle Cottage.

Master Bedroom of Sandcastle Cottage, Crail

The master bedroom has views towards Roome Bay so you can check out the weather before deciding whether to bounce out of bed early or have a delightful long lie - after all you're on your holidays!

There's an en-suite shower room off the bedroom so no need to trail downstairs to the bathroom in the middle of the night. A cottage with both a bathroom and a shower-room makes getting ready for your daily expeditions so much easier too.
The cot-bed is situated in the master bedroom - it's a proper large sized cot, so suitable for children up to about the age of 5 or 6 (although by that time they'll be protesting at being put in a cot!)

Family bathroom at Sandcastle Cottage, Crail

With a large shower-end bath in our downstairs bathroom, you have the option of a quick shower or a long soak. We love the little seaside details on the tiles too.

Triple-bedded room: ideal for families of 5

Although you can only see two beds in this picture, there are three single beds in the room, meaning that families of 5 can be accommodated in the cottage. There are views out towards the sea and you can just catch a glimpse of the blink of the lighthouse on the Island of May over the houses opposite.

The upstairs en-suite shower room

With decor matching that of the downstairs bathroom, the presence of our shower room off the master bedroom makes a big difference when 5 people are staying in the cottage. (Shorter queues for the bathroom!)

Wow! Sandcastle Cottage has a garden too!

Visitors are often surprised to find a lovely long back garden to the rear of our property. There's a patio and some garden furniture so that you can relax here and read a book or have a drink. A grassy area (not too pristine) means that if you have children in your group, they can trot about happily in the garden while you have some essential relaxing time.
We did open the garden for Scotland's Open Gardens scheme back in 2002. If you're in Crail in the second half of July you'll get the chance to go and visit other gardens - but don't worry, we won't be opening Sandcastle Cottage's garden to the public while you're in residence!
