Morton Mains Cottage was bought by my father in 1986, and my family have been enjoying holidays there for many years.
The cottage is situated approximately 3 miles North East of Thornhill, in Dumfries and Galloway.
It is a single storey traditional 19th century cottage, built from the pink sandstone that is typical of the region. It lies up a very lightly used road, and the nearest inhabited house is over half a mile away.
The cottage garden is bordered by a stream and pine trees on one side, with breathtaking views of the Lowther Hills on the other side.
The cottage comprises of an entrance porch, two double bedrooms and one twin room, a spacious dining and living room with open fire, bathroom with deep cast iron freestanding bath (shower in separate room), kitchen, and larder. One of the double bedrooms is accessed through the twin room, but it has its own ensuite toilet, shower and sink.
All the living room, dining room, porch and bedroom windows are double glazed, and the cottage is fitted with gas fired central heating. The water supply is from a spring in the hills.
Morton Loch is a 10 minute walk from the cottage. Fishing is available on the loch, which surrounds the beautiful ruined 13th Century Morton Castle.
The town of Thornhill offers pubs, a chemist, grocery shops, takeaways and a lovely butcher. The larger town of Dumfries is about 16 miles away. Here you can find a Tesco Extra, cinema, ice rink, and of course plenty of shops.
We supply all bed linen, but ask that you kindly bring your own towels. Logs and coal for the fire are provided free of charge. The cottage is equipped with a washing machine, oven, fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle, blender and pots, pans, cooking utensils and crockery and cutlery.
There are numerous golf courses in Dumfries and Galloway, perhaps most notably the championship Southerness links course.
There is no TV or phone line at the cottage which I think is a good thing! There is, however, a mobile phone signal.
