Balfluig Castle is a fine example of a sixteenth century Scottish Castellated home, with many interesting defensive features. The date over the door is 1556. Restored in 1968 it has modern comforts and is well furnished. Electric storage heaters provide central heating throughout, and there are plenty of portable electric heaters. There is a spring water supply and some domestic help.
Ground Floor - The kitchen is fully equipped, including a dishwasher. It has a breakfast table. Cooking is by electric range cooker and a microwave. There is a dining room next to it. On this level too is a utility room with basin, sink, W.C., washing machine and drying facilities.
First Floor - The Great Hall is a bright and spacious living room with comfortable seating, an open fire, a grand piano and a radio and CD player. There is a small sitting room (the charter room) off the great hall.
Second Floor - The main bedroom (south ladychamber) has a double four-poster bed, and there is another bedroom (north ladychamber) with twin beds. There are two bathrooms each with a bath, basin and W.C.
Third Floor - There is a single room (night-nursery ) with a basin and a double room (turret room) with two beds. There is a bathroom with a bath and a basin.
Fourth Floor - A romantic staircase leads to the caphouse, a bedroom with a double bed and basin. It has windows giving views in many directions.
Setting - The Castle is a free standing part of a courtyard which it forms with the cottage and outbuildings. All the buildings are nationally listed. The Castle is listed as grade A. Parking is in the courtyard. Around the Castle is a private garden, and beyond it is a grassy field and a shelter belt of trees. The whole property is about 4 and a quarter acres or 1.72 hectares, being a rectangle in which the buildings are centrally placed.
Sport and Recreation - The Castle is well placed for the many golf courses in Aberdeenshire. A wide choice of walks is available, including the West Gordon Way and around Loch Muick. There is some public fishing, and fishing can be hired. Trails concerning Castles and Whisky are promoted by VisitScotland, and families and clans come together in various ways including the games and gatherings which are annual features.
