Proprietors on Holiday

Your Hosts:- Maggie & Fred Findlay

Maggie & Fred have owned Rickwood House Hotel Portpatrick South West Scotland since the summer of 2000. Each year we try to improve further the comfort and quality our beautiful house has to offer our guests.

Maggie is an accomplished cook, an activity she thoroughly enjoys and has the certificates from Natural Cooking of Scotland to prove it!

As of January 2011, we have been consistently ranked No1 B&B in Portpatrick by Tripadvisor for 2 years!

In March 2011 we were delighted to win the award from Scottish Hotel Awards for National Excellence in Customer Care - Guest House category. These awards are recognised as being the Scottish Hotel & Guest House "Oscars"!! We were also runners -up for Guest House of the Year in 2009

We are both outdoors enthusiasts and try to fit in a bit of hill-walking when we can (very seldom these days!)

Maggie has climbed all 214 of the Lake District Wainwrights (as of November 2009) while Fred "compleated" his round of the Scottish Munros in 2008

We have some photos further on in this section from some of our favourite walks near Portpatrick. We are busy adding a "walks from Portpatrick" page on our website which should be there soon!

We love to go on holiday ourselves and here is a picture of us on a memorable visit to Doubtful Sound in New Zealand.

Our Dining Room

Our Dining Room

From our Dining Room, if you are early enough to get a window seat, you can enjoy the sea views while enjoying a leisurely breakfast or dinner.

Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon is always a favourite. Our traditional porrige is also very popular. Finally, Maggie`s poached egss are legendary!!

The dining room opens out to our new conservatory where you are welcome to take through your last cup of tea or coffee, enjoy the views and see what the weather has in store for the day!!

CONSERVATORY B & B PORTPATRICK

Our Conservatory- Rickwood House Hotel Port Patrick

Here is our recently built conservatory which opens off our dining room and has first class views over the Irish Sea.

Guests are welcome to take through that last cup of breakfast coffee or tea and sit back to admire the view, plan your day or see what the weather has in store.

We have a good supply of books, both guide books and novels for you to browse through and we also have a few games handy for our younger guests.

We have a residents licence so you can relax here and enjoy a refreshing drink at any time.

The Factors Suite

The Factors Suite - a Touch of Luxury in Rickwood House Hotel Port Patrick

We have refurbished the original master bedroom to create our Factors Suite.

This large room is ideal for those seeking a touch of luxury or a bit more space to spread out.

The room has first class sea views to the South and the West and even the en-suite, which has a bath and shower, is larger than normally found elsewhere. Bath robes and fresh flowers are included.

The room has furniture crafted from recycled timbers and has a comfortable seating area where you can relax and watch a dvd.

There are a number of prints by contemporary Scottish artists on the walls.

The Factors Suite also doubles as a family or twin room as required.

Room 1 - our Luxury Twin Room in Rickwood House Hotel Portpatrick

Following the success of our Factors Suite, we decided earlier this year to upgrade our downstairs twin room. Again, the new furniture is made from recycled wood and the room has been completely redecorated. We are sure you will like it!
We also have available a luxury King-size double room.

Dunskey Castle, Portpatrick, South West Scotland

One of our favourite short walks from Portpatrick is to Dunskey Castle, a spectacular ruin on the cliff top. It takes no more than 30 minutes to walk to the castle , however, you could reduce this by taking your car to Portpatrick harbour or by parking at Castlebay Caravan Park if you don`t fancy the 100 odd steps up to the top!
In January this year (2010) we have seen a pod of dolphins from the castle heading north on three occassions.

Rickwood House Hotel portpATRICK KILANTRINGAN LIGHTHOUSE

Killantringan Lighthouse - a short walk from Portpatrick along the Southern Upland Way

You may be lucky enough to spot a seal or two on this walk!

Portaptrick is at the sart of the Southern Upland Way which crosses the entire South of Scotand and ends at Cockburnspath on the east coast.
In our opinion, the best part of the parth is the first couple of miles which follows the cliffs from Portpatrick to this lighthouse.
The path descends to a couple of secluded bays on the way.
A few remains of the Craigantlet , a cargo ship which ran aground in 1982 can still be seen just before you reach the lighthouse.
If you have any energy left, it is well worth continuing to the beach beyond the lighhouse which is as quiet as it is beautiful!
Last year (2009) as couple of seals have been spotted around Sandeel Bay about 20 minutes from the start of this walk
The link below will provide you with further information on this walk.

Rickwood House Hotel Portpatrick Mountans of Mourne

Sunset - the Mountains of Mourne

Believe it or not, this photograph was taken from the end of our road.
The Mountains of Mourne can frequently be seen - usually later on in the day as the sun sinks behind them.
On really clear days, the Isle of Man is also visible.

Number 1 B&B in Portpatrick..
next stop, No 1 B&B in South West Scotland?

We are delighted to have been voted Number 1 B&B in Portpatrick by Trip Advisor for 15 consecutive months as of April 2010. Our next goal is No 1 B&B in Stranraer area followed no 1 B&B in Dumfries & Galloway, then the big one--No 1 B&B in Scotland!!

Dream on!
