Whitchester Christian Guest House and Retreat

Enjoy gracious living in the former Dower House of the Buccleuch Estate, recently re-furbished to provide a balance between modern convenience and a 19th century country house. Standing in 3 acres of landscaped grounds, the large front lawn provides for croquet and badminton. For those hot days and warm summer evenings the summer house and gazebo give shelter. Traditional and innovative recipes using fresh produce from the walled garden with local fish and meat give the menu a genuine Scottish flavour. Vegetarian and more specialised diets can be catered for.
The town of Hawick is a gentle 45 mins walk away, stopping off to visit Wilton Lodge Museum en route and, in summer, the award winning walled garden. Plenty of free car parking is available for those unable to walk. Visit Drumlanrig's Tower with its audio visual tableaux of Border History, or tour some of the world famous woollen mills, with their bargain shops. Hawick is steeped in history: the annual Common Riding commemorates the capture of the standard belonging to the Abbot of Hexham, by the youth of the town in 1514, following the battle of Flodden. The town's Summer Festival is a great family event in August, whilst June sees the Annual Chess Congress and September the Jazz Festival. Abbeys, Historic Houses and specialist gardens are all on hand. Berwick and Carlisle are an hour away, Edinburgh only an hour and a half.
For the more energetic: 7 golf courses; endless walks of varying lengths and difficulty; cycling in Craik Forest; quadbiking on the Selkirk Heights; fishing in the Teviot or Tweed; horse riding; archery; the list is almost endless. Followers of rugby may be interested in the inter town 7's in late spring and early autumn.
Whatever your interests: walking; painting; bird-watching; history; shopping;or just in need of a pampered rest: Whitchester makes an ideal base for all activities and none!
Relaxing becomes easy in the peaceful atmosphere of the house and grounds and the woodland includes a specially designed prayer walk. Laze outdoors on warm summer days, or in front of the log fire in winter.
