La bergerie in France is a shieling where the shepherd (berger in French) would live in summer looking after his animals and making cheese, spinning wool, knitting etc to sell in the open markets in the villages of the valley. The proprietress is French and her cottage has a distinct French influence and charming personal touches like home made patchwork and painting made by her mother.
The cottage stands on an elevated position overlooking LochBay and across the Minch to the Outer Isles. It has one of the most breathtaking panoramic views to be found on the Isle of Skye. La Bergerie is situated on a working croft so you can experience at first hand the rare flock of Hebridean black sheep and the Highland cattle as they graze close by.
The cottage can sleep up to 8 people in comfort. The accommodation comprises two twin-bedrooms with private facilities on the ground floor and one twin and one double bedroom on the first floor. (One of the twin bedrooms can be converted to a superking bedroom). These bedrooms have a shared bath and shower room with spa bath. The bathrooms are bright, modern and warm. The bedrooms are large and extremely comfortable with wardrobe storage in each bedroom. All bed linen and towels are provided. A cot and highchair are also provided for babies.
The large open plan sitting/dining room offers a modern space with stunning uninterrupted views from the windows. The sitting area has comfortable sofas, chairs, and an open fire, as well as a window seat; the full height dining area with a balcony has a dining table that seats 10 to 12, so this is a room in which you can truly relax and unwind.
The kitchen is fully modernised and equipped with an electric oven, gas hob, microwave, dishwasher, washing-machine and large fridge/freezer fitted units. All cooking ustensils, crockery & glassware are provided. There is a separate storage area with plenty of room for coats, wellies, shoes and muddy walking boots!
Outside there is a patio with tables and chairs where you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast, indulge in an evening barbeque of freshly caught local shellfish or just sit and soak up the peace and tranquility, watching the wonderful sunsets reflecting on the sea. The large garden area is securely fenced to keep children safe while they play in the childrens play-house.
La Bergerie is also suitable for guests with disabilities and you can find details of our facilities on the website link below.
The local village of Stein was originally an eighteenth century fishing village and today is home to the oldest inn on Skye (the Stein Inn) which is just a mile away, a small craft shop and a seafood restaurant. The Stein Inn offers a log fire, real ale, and lovely meals.
There are many local artists in pottery, painting, craft and clothing design and the local dive centre can provide some sporting activities or offer you some exciting boat trips. Dunvegan Castle, the ancient ancestral seat of the clan MacLeod, is about ¼ hour drive away.
The Isle of Skye is a haven for wild-life; enjoy observing animals and birds at sea and on land either on a trip of your own or as an organised tour. There are a wide variety of documented walks and places of historic interest to explore here.
