The Knowes Hotel

The Knowes Hotel

Information enquiry Booking

Located in the heart of Macduff in an elevated location, The Knowes Hotel is a small family run hotel offering a warm Scottish welcome with breathtaking views over the Moray Firth coast to the Caithness coastline.

The Northeast embodies much of what Scotland is famous for. Indeed, abounding scenery, historical castles, whisky trails and a fantastic array of Scottish golf courses are all in this region.

No matter what your desire, be it pure relaxation, leisure (or even business !!), you will find the Knowes Hotel offers a perfect base to explore this part of the North East of Scotland.

Macduff and Banff are two separate coastal towns situated on the north east coast of Scotland, joined together by a seven arched bridge which crosses the River Deveron, before entering the Moray Firth.

Macduff has a long history associated with the fishing industry and although in recent years there has been a marked decline in fishing, the harbour still plays a key role in the town.

The harbour has been of immense importance to the town's prosperity, boat building, fishing and allied trades have been the main employers of manpower. The better harbour facilities at Macduff coupled with problems of silting up Banff harbour led to the Banff fishing boats moving across the bay.(The harbour in Banff has now been made into a Marina and is due to open in April of 2007) In 1898 the Duke of Fife sold the harbour for a nominal sum to Macduff Town Council.Over the years numerous improvements have taken place allowing an increasing number of boats to be based there. At its peak there were 45 steam drifters, 25 large and 30 small boats belonging to Macduff.
During the 1920's engineering became a growing industry and the Macduff Engineering Company was a prominent force especially with the advent of the motor engine in shipping and this firm introduced and patented several new products. Boat building has a long tradition at Macduff and today both wood and steel boats are being built in modern sheds with excellent slipway facilities.

Although Macduff is still a fully operational boatyard the area is no longer as reliant on the fishing as it once was and tourism is now a key source of revenue and employment within the area.

We have recently refurbished all our bedrooms and now offer 4 ensuite rooms consisting of 3 doubles and 1 twin. We also have 1 single room which is part ensuite. 4 of the 5 letting rooms offer stunning views of the Bay and beyond, all rooms have tea & coffee making facilities, TV & hairdryer.

Dining - Bar and Restaurant
We serve food in both our bar and restaurant and indeed the house speciality is the opportunity of watching the dolphins play whilst you dine.

We serve hot & cold meals in the bar at lunchtime (between 12 & 2pm) and bar suppers from 5pm 8pm with a wide range of traditional pub grub items on the menu and daily specials.

Our Restaurant is open 5 nights a week (Wednesday through Sunday) from 6pm 8.30 pm (9pm from April to September) and offers a range of dishes which are all freshly prepared on the premises using the finest of local produce, most of which is also sourced from local suppliers.

After your dinner why not sit and relax with a coffee and liquer and enjoy the beautiful north east sunsets from the comfort of our conservatory.

We have a Function Room which is available for private parties, weddings and events which can cater for up to 100 people. Should you wish to discuss an event we would be more than happy to tailor a package to suit your needs.
Attractions

Golf
For a weekend away and with the golf clubs in the boot of the car, the Northeast is every golfer's dream and more. There are more than 60 classic, unspoilt courses on which to enjoy a round of golf. From traditional, seaside links that boast a ferocious bite to more inland, subtler tests, the Northeast has every golfing challenge at its disposal. The majority of the courses are within a 1 hour drive of Macduff from Moray (Lossiemouth) to Aberdeen but there are 2 outstanding tests on our doorstep with Royal Tarlair and Duff House Royal both being within 2 miles of the hotel.

Royal Tarlair is a short but challenging links course with one of the most famous and spectacular par threes in the north of Scotland and Duff House is a typical inland course bordering the River Deveron and with views of the majestic Duff House. We are pleased to say that we have preferential rates on both these courses and tee times can be arranged with advance notice.

Should you be short of practice there is an excellent new driving range (Myrus Driving Range) a mere 2 minutes drive from the hotel where you can warm up before you tee off.
