Craigdene

Craigdene is a lovingly restored Georgian Town House in the heart of the East Neuk. All rooms have private or en-suite facilities. Bedrooms are large, airy and furnished with antiques. There is secure, off-street parking in Craigdene’s own courtyard motor vehicles and cycles. Walkers can be collected from the coast or nearby rail stations. Colinsburgh is accessible by bus, with an hourly service from St Andrews, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Craigdene is a beautifully maintained and traditionally furnished Georgian Townhouse in the historic village of Colinsburgh, built by Colin, Earl of Balcarres to house his disbanded Jacobite soldiers after the failed 1745 rebellion. Named after the Earl, the village lies immediately South of the Balcarres Estate, thousands of acres of rolling parkland, farmland and woodland where visitors are welcome to walk.
Looking South from Craigdene, visitors can glimpse the Firth of Forth and the hills of East Lothian beyond. Elie’s blue-flag beach, famous for its miles of clean golden sands and safe bathing is a five minute drive away and, in its sheltered bay, caters for watersports enthusisasts experienced and inexperienced alike with a dedicated watersports centre.
Strolling along the Fife Coastal Path visitors will next arrive in St Monans, a traditional fishing village famous for its east coast kippers and smoked salmon and wide variety of seafood. Visitors can visit the smoke house to select their own favourites, or let someone else do the work by eating at the renowned Seafood Restaurant situated on the foreshore. A mile or so further along the coast, past St Monans’ attractive cliff-top windmill, you will discover Pittenweem – now famous for its annual arts festival and for being home to hundreds of artists who choose to live and work next to the sea. Finally there is Anstruther, larger than the other East Neuk villages, with a bustling seafront of small independent shops and an award-winning fish restaurant. Here you can catch a fishing boat to the Isle of May, home to Europe’s largest colony of puffins and a destination for bird enthusiasts and dolphin watchers alike.
Birdwatchers are also captivated by the variety of breeds living around Kilconquhar Loch and Barnyards nature reserve, both of which a few minutes walk from Craigdene, and a few hundred yards from Kilconquhar Castle.
Fife is a golfers paradise, and Craigdene is a perfect central point for accessing the Kingdom’s more than 40 courses. The nearest, Charleton, is 800 metres away and St Andrews is 9 miles away – as is the reputed new course at Kingsbarns.
Colinsburgh is 2.5 miles from Elie and is ideally situated for walkers, with the Fife Coastal Path and the Balcarres Estate on its doorstep, and for cyclists and birdwatchers with Kilconquhar Loch and Barnyards nature reserve less than a mile away down a quiet country lane.
Colinsburgh has its own golf course at Charleton, made famous by George Bush senior and Sean Connery, and is 9 miles from St Andrews and a further 40 golf courses are all accessible in less than a 30 minute drive.
Craigdene is open all year and a warm welcome awaits all, including those with special dietary requirements. So, whether a biker or on business, a walker or a twitcher or just someone looking for a truly relaxing retreat we look forward to welcoming you soon.
