Kirkcudbright, on the River Dee is a historic settlement with many attractions including its ancient High Street and colourful town houses. The town and local area retains an unspoilt charm with a warm welcome provided by local people. It is known as the "Artists' Town" because of its connections with artists from the Glasgow school of painting. E A Hornel's home, Broughton House, makes a very interesting visit. The Tolbooth Gallery and the Stewartry Museum are other highlights. The town has a good range of shops and several excellent restaurants. There are tennis courts, a bowling green and a swimming pool. The harbour is used by fishing boats and for recreational sailing. The countryside and beaches provide delightful walking and there are golf courses and a driving range close by. Excellent opportunities for bird-watching are found locally on the estuary, at Caerlaverock Reserve and the Galloway Red Kite Trail.
