Lasgair, 35 Lower Barvas

Come and enjoy a holiday in the Isle of Lewis, staying in our modern, well-equipped caravan and discover our islands. At Lasgair, you are assured of an island welcome and anything we can do to make your stay more comfortable, you have only to let us know.
The village of Lower Barvas is situated on the West side of Lewis and is 11 miles from the main town of Stornoway on the A857 route. Lower Barvas sits between Upper Barvas to the north-west and Brue to the east. Ideally situated for activities such as birdwatching, sightseeing, archaeological sites of interest, moorwalking and surfing. The caravan is sited on a working croft and has a view of the Atlantic Ocean. It is on a main bus route which runs Mon-Sat at regular intervals to the town of Stornoway.
There are many sites of interest for visitors to Lewis. Barvas is ideal for sampling the diverse activities on offer :– for culture, just a mile up the road on the A857, visit Morven Gallery to see art exhibitions and locally made arts and crafts; be sure to visit the café to sample the homebaking. Six miles away is the neighbouring village of Borve, where you can see the wonderful pottery which is created on-site at Borgh Pottery. Continue northwards to visit Taigh Donnchadh which plays host to musical evenings or storytelling; or visit the Harbour View Gallery at Port of Ness for spectacular watercolour prints of island life. Or, heading in a westerly direction, you can take the circular route and just a mile and a half away is the renowned Oiseval Gallery at Brue, where you can admire the beautiful, atmospheric photographs in which the owner James Smith, has captured the many-changing moods of the landscapes of the Western Isles. If wished, these can be purchased as a reminder of your visit to Lewis. Continue onwards and you can stop off at the Black House in Arnol, which is a traditional Lewis thatched house and depicts the type of lifestyle the indigenous people enjoyed in the not so distant past. On this route, you will also see the famous Whalebone Arch at Bragar, and continuing onwards, on your right, the Shawvbost Norse Mill & Kiln. Further on is the Carloway Broch; the Callanish Standing Stones and Visitor Centre where you can enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee and enjoy the views. You will also be able to enjoy the beaches on the Westside – Dalbeg and Dalmore; if the weather is conducive, you can enjoy a dip. Feeling hungry, you can visit Doune Braes Hotel in Carloway, lunch at Gearranan Blackhouse Village, or Tigh Mealros in Callanish, (booking advisable).
For the sporting enthusiast, Barvas is ideal for activities, such as surfing, moorwalking, cycling and landscape photography. It is also well located for birdwatching or salmon and trout fishing. Fishing permits (£5) can be obtained locally for fishing on the Barvas loch, and if required, a boat can also be provided. There are also plenty of other lochs further afield for the keen fisherman to try out.
These are just a sample of the many sights and activities to enjoy on the West side of Lewis. Closer to home, visitors are welcome to access the beach via the croft – a 15 minute walk, or alternatively, can drive to the main entrance of the machair at Loch Street which is about half a mile from the caravan location. This beach is a favourite with surfers who can often be seen displaying their skills when the surf is high. There is a ‘Welcome In’ filling station approximately half a mile from the caravan which supplies petrol and groceries; the caravan s only yards away from the bus-stop for coaches heading to the town of Stornoway and various other island villages.
