Quildon

Quildon (pronounced Wheeldon) is a historical farm building which has undergone a renovation in 2007. Now completely modernised throughout, it is open for visitors to the picturesque town of Stromness in the Orkney islands.....

These beautiful, light and airy 2-bedroom flats are just the place you would wish to unwind after a hard days sightseeing, visiting all that Orkney has to offer. Each self catering unit sleeps four, and is equipped with mod cons to make your holiday as relaxed as possible.

Quildon has a stunning view over the harbour of Stromness, looking out over Scapa Flow, and is only a five minute walk from the main street of the town and it's shops and restaurants.

ABOUT THE HOUSE

Like many Orkney place names, the name Quildon is derived from a Norse word. A ‘wheeling’ is a rest place and in times past when a coffin was being taken to the kirkyard, the mourners would rest here when they were within sight of the cemetery.

Quildon or Quildings Quoy (as seen on the oldest title deeds) was a small farm, dating back to the 1700s. Most farms has a grain-drying kiln adjoining the barn and the one here is one of the best preserved in Orkney. Parts of the old farmhouse are incorporated into this house. The bedroom and en-suite bathroom would have been part of the farmhouse.

The building has been owned by members of my family for almost a century, but was sold in 1982. In 2003, the house again came on the market and my husband, Jimmy and I bought it to turn into holiday accommodation. We are proud of Quildon, and as it is a part of our family, have restored it to immaculate condition. We are certain that you will be comfortable here!
