Stirling is dominated by its impressive castle, perched on basalt rock that was formed by the rivers Forth and Clyde and the relatively small parcel of land between them. Our ancient town of Stirling, on the main east-west route across Scotland grew up around the castle. It lies in the heart of an area so turbulent in Scottish history it was called the “cockpit of Scotland” (Here “Cockpit” refers to the pit where male chickens would be forced to engage in cockfights.) One memorable battle fought here was the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, when Robert 1 (the Bruce) defeated the army of Edward 11 of England and gained Scotland its independence. Another was the battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.

Ever since the release of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, world attention has focussed on our Scottish National hero William Wallace, a freedom fighter who became known as the “hammer and scourge” of the English.

The City Sightseeing Tour is a convenient way to see the sights of Stirling. Hop on the open-topped bus with its knowledgeable guide and take the circular route stopping at many bus stops in and around Stirling. There are numerous historic sights to explore. Stirling Castle with its re-constructed mediaeval kitchen, beautiful gardens and military display, Argyll’s lodging, a 17th century town residence, Wallace monument, and Old Town Jail to name but a few.

Shopping is a terrific experience in Stirling with its many high street stores but it still retains those wee nick knacks shops that we all love to explore. Many restaurants and bars can be found in and around the city. For those seeking more adventure there are many outdoor activities to be taken advantage of too. Cricket, golf, ice skating, fishing and hill climbing are some of the many sports on our doorstep. Not to be forgotten, our famous Highland Games.

Stirling is the central crossroads of Scotland, giving easy access by rail and road to all its major town and cities.
