Brackenbury - Getting There

Getting there from the Information Centre

Take the A866 road out towards Stornoway Airport, past Oliver’s Brae and into Sandwick. North Street is the first road on the left after the cemetery (on your right) and the Free Church (a modern building on your left). Brackenbury is just over one and a half miles from the Tourist Information Centre.

Getting There by Car

The postcode is HS2 0AD, for those who wish to find us on Google Earth, or 50º12’24.75”N/6º21’14.26”W if you want to use satellite navigation.

Getting There by Railway

There are no rail services on the Isle of Lewis. Take a train from UK mainline stations to Inverness, then a Citylink bus number 961 from Inverness to Ullapool. Then take the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from Ullapool to Stornoway. Take a taxi to Brackenbury, or bus W5 or W7 from the Bus Station (next to the ferry terminal).

Getting there by Aeroplane

There are flights to Stornoway from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness, with BA/Logan Air (www.flybe.com) and Eastern Airways (www.easternairways.com). Highland Airways (www.higlandairways.co.uk) also provide flights internal to the Western Isles, including landing on a beach at Barra, with timings depending on the tides. Worth the trip, just for the experience!

Take a taxi or the W7 bus from Stornoway airport to Brackenbury.

Getting There by Ferry

There are two choices of ferry depending where you are travelling from.

Carry on north from Inverness to the ferry port of Ullapool. You can catch the ferry from there to Stornoway, which will take 2 hours 40 minutes. Travel time from Stornoway to Sandwick is around 5 minutes. Visit www.calmac.com for times of sailings.

From Uig on Skye you can take the ferry to Tarbert, Harris. This route takes 1 hour 30 minutes on the ferry, with the drive north to Stornoway and Sandwick taking about 45 minutes (depending on how often you stop to take photographs!).
