Forst
Welcome to Forst, a recently refurbished one bed roomed semi-detached cottage nestling in the heart of the historic seaside village of Palace. It is said it was built in the early 1930s from deck cargo retrieved from SS Borg when the ship went aground in Birsay Bay.
Forst has easy access to the shore and is directly opposite the Post Office and shop where fuel is available. Birsay Bay Tearoom is found a few metres up the road over the Boardhouse burn while St Magnus church is diagonally opposite the cottage. Earl’s Palace is spitting distance away. The Brough of Birsay with remains of Viking longhouses is within walking distance.
The cottage is in the centre of bird watching country with the RSPB reserves at the Loons and Marwick Head close by. The Kitchener Memorial is also at Marwick Head and further along this part of the coast is the Neolithic village of Skara Brae.
Birsay has the last working water driven mill where oatmeal and bere meal are processed during the winter.
There is a good selection of local craft studios in the area and a nursery producing Orkney grown plants.
About 6mls away is the village of Dounby which has a shop, Post Office, butcher and public house with restaurant.
