Herons Self-Catering holiday cottage

Information enquiry Booking

Only an hour from Aberdeen airport, yet a world away ...
HERONS is a cosy cottage located in an enviable spot between beach and harbour in the old fishing village. Nestling in a quiet lane, shops, pub + beach are a stone’s throw away. Winding alleys and steps encourage exploration with hidden gems around every corner.

Gardenstown is a very dog-friendly village and we welcome well-behaved dogs (2 max). Children welcome too!

Herons is a 3-storey building (one double, one twin) with a separate lower floor annexe (sleeps 2). This annexe is also suitable for those interested in watersports as the first large room is ideal for wet gear. Nevertheless, it also comprises a big bedroom with king-size bed, easy chairs and en-suite shower room, comfy for grandma and grandpa, perhaps?

The climate along this stretch of coast is unusually mild – a well-kept secret! However, if cooler we’ll ensure the house is nice and warm for your arrival.
As we live in the village we are happy to accommodate special requests where possible. Please don’t hesitate – we want your stay to be special.

The House:
1 Double bedroom. Sea/cliff view
1 Twin room. Cliff view
Large, well-equipped dining kitchen, table seats 6. Open fire
Living room with open fire. TV, DVD, CD player, games, puzzles, books
Bathroom
Separate annexe opens onto large room with sinks, washing machine + dryer; also suitable for wet gear and storage (+ muddy dogs!). Bedroom (sleeps 2) with king-size bed + easy chairs, en-suite wc/shower room.

Linen+ towels included, extras available
Feather+down pillows; synthetic available
Welcome pack: tea, coffee, sugar, milk, bread, butter, marmalade, muesli and wine or beer. We’ll make sure you have firelighters and coal.

Steps lead to Herons which makes the property unsuitable for the infirm.

We recommend using free car parking by beach or harbour, but often a parking space is available nearer Herons.

NO-SMOKING IN THE PROPERTY

The village has a baker/general store, butcher and a friendly pub all within 3 minutes walk of Herons. The pub serves good food but please call to book in advance. A quiz night is held on Thursdays, all welcome! During the school summer holidays there is a tea room next to the harbour.
A 15 minute walk up the glen from the beach will reward you with fabulous views and an interesting 11th century ruined church.
Picturesque Crovie can be reached by walking along the seafront footpath.

The main sea wall is the only road in the Seatown area of the village so there is very little traffic. To add to the sense of escape there is no mobile signal in the old village; you really can ‘get away from it all’.

Further afield, Macduff has a small supermarket and a monthly Farmers’ market. A good fishmonger near the Marine Aquarium sells fresh fish daily. Nature watching boat trips run from Macduff (‘Puffin’, a converted fishing boat) and from Banff (‘North 58’, a RHIB able to get very close to seals and rare seabird colonies). You may well see dolphins and minke whale.
Banff has a good choice of shops. The Tourist Office in Banff is very helpful and the leisure marina at at the far end of the town is a pleasant place to stop. Watersports, including a diving centre, can be found here.

Slightly further afield are some lovely coastal villages including Pennan, Portsoy, Buckie and Cullen (famous as the home of ‘Cullen Skink’, a delicious fish soup).
Inland you’ll find beautiful walking country, in particuler lovely rivers in the area.
There are several first class golf courses nearby.

Aviemore and the Cairngorms are a day trip and the more rugged Highlands are not far away.

The Castle Trail is very near, and for ‘refreshment’ there are the whisky distilleries, many of which are open to visitors. Speyside produces, arguably, the best malt whiskies in the world. The Whisky Trail is a great way to spend a rainy day.

This area of North East Scotland is not yet fully discovered by the tourism industry, giving many opportunities for peaceful meanderings and delightful discoveries. It is a photographer’s dream with fabulous coastal scenery and magnificent, ever-changing skies. The wildlife is a great attraction with several nature and bird reserves in the region.
