The Cowal Peninsula and surrounding Loch Fyne Area
Though perhaps less well known than many other areas of Scotland, the Cowal Peninsula is a ‘hidden’ treasure with an abundance of spectacular scenery, a range of wildlife, flora and fauna and an engaging history. The Cowal Peninsula and surrounding Loch Fyne area has a great many visitor attractions which should satisfy a range of interests. The historical town of Inverary is a mere 25 shore-side drive away where Inverary Castle and the Jail House (the former Georgian courthouse which features in R.L Stevenson and Neil Munro novels) offer, among others, fascinating visits. These can be rounded off with a drink or a meal at the superb George Inn, an old coaching inn which retains an amazing atmosphere and is guaranteed to have cosy fires roaring in the winter months. Other attractions in the area include a range of fine gardens (such as Benmore Botanic Garden, Crarae Woodland Garden and Ardkinglas Arboretum), many ancient monuments and prehistoric sites around Kilmartin village (with the award winning Kilmartin House Museum) and a good range of outdoor activities including horse riding, bird-watching, fishing, sailing, golf and much more. The area is particularly good for walking and boasts a wide variety of beautiful walks to suit all levels, including the Cowal Way, a long distance walk of 47 miles, divided into six sections and stretching from Portavadie (by Loch Fyne) to Ardgarten (by Loch Long). The network of small, quiet roads in the area, with stunning vistas, lends itself particularly well to cycling. Off-road cycling is also possible with some beautiful cycle tracks in the Argyll Forest providing interesting and challenging routes. The islands of Bute and Gigha are easily reached from the cottage for day trips and just a bit further afield Oban provides a gateway to the West Coast Islands.
