The Flying School

A beautiful and luxurious conversion – part of a 200 year old church – The Flying School was named after nests of Swallows were discovered when we first moved in to the house. This is where mum & dad Swallow taught their babies to fly, hence the name! Swallows still nest outside the church and can be seen in the area creating many excellent photo opportunities.
The Church itself stopped being used as a church at the beginning of the last century and has had many other uses since including a joiners shop where pigs were kept in part of the house, but more notably was used as a dance hall for the local villagers. Many a romance started here including a couple who met there and who still live opposite the church! The neighbours love telling us about their escapades from those days, including many of the trades people who have worked on the renovation.
We have lovingly refurbished the accommodation to a high modern standard and like to think of it as old meets new in Style.
A lovely open plan sitting room leads into a well designed brand new fully equipped kitchen with plenty of space for dining and entertaining on holiday. All floors are wooden with a hand made oak staircase leading to two very well appointed bedrooms including one en-suite .
The main bathroom has a shower bath with electric shower over and mood lighting for those relaxing soaks after a hard days enjoyment. The en-suite features a massaging power shower cabinet. Both bathrooms are finished with modern white suites.
Both bedrooms are large and airy with high ceilings to accommodate the full height arched windows. The second bedroom has feature lighting around the electric Velux window in the roof. All the furniture and fittings have been carefully chosen and are to a high standard.
Electric central heating with a multi fuel stove in the sitting area.
Satellite TV incorporating DVD player
Radio alarms with i-pod docking.
At the back of the property is a large patio area with garden furniture which looks onto the open paddock where we keep 5 friendly sheep and an assortment of chickens and ducks. A burn winds its way through the grounds.
The Flying School is an ideal place to base yourselves for a relaxing break where you choose the pace of your holiday. Drumlanrig Castle with mountain biking and fabulous walking routes is only 3 miles away and in the summer you can also visit the Arts & Crafts shops in the Castle Courtyard, the Adventure playground and the gardens. They also provide land rover tours, Architectural tours, a bicycle museum and Disc Golf – one of the world’s fastest growing sports!
Thornhill is a haven for shopping with exclusive shops and boutiques….. and local hotels and cafes provide plenty of choice for eating out.
Nearby is Moniaive for arts & culture, organic café
On your tour around the local countryside you may see the Andy Galsworthy ‘Striding Arches’ outdoor sculpture project.
Further a field but still within easy access is the Solway coast where you can visit the beach, go horse riding or take a gentle stroll along the stunning coastline.
