The Borders is infamous for its savage warring families who fought and foraged for generations across the region. The best way to understand its history and see famous sites is to follow the Reiver Trail.
If you want to research into previous generations of your family then visit the Heart of Hawick and search out your family connections in the state of the art genealogy centre. For a small fee it is amazing how much the experts can uncover – it would be wise to book this in advance of your stay.
There is a lot to see whatever time of year you decide to visit, or if you prefer, you can just shut the door behind you and lock the world out for a few days.
