Bower Old Free Church Manse

Our beautiful Georgian Manse, as featured on BBC Radio Scotland, is situated in the heart of Caithness. This makes it an ideal base for exploring the county.
We are just a short drive from Dunnet Beach, with its 2 mile stretch of stunning white Atlantic sand it is renowned for its scenery surfing and space; indeed at low tide, with its VAST expanses of sandy shore, there are few places on earth to touch its natural beauty. (See our website www.caithnesshistory.co.uk )!
The very best of Caithness’ loch fishing is available only 10 minutes away at Loch Watten, while Dunnet forest allows you to experience arguably Caithness’ finest flora and fauna by means of its fantastic range of walks and cycle paths, it's only a short drive from the house.
The coastal village of Castletown is just 5-10 minutes away and offers all the local services including; pubs, takeaways, local butchers, convenience store and post office, and great Highland hospitality to boot!
The manse, built in 1844, is set within lovely established gardens, and surrounded by large Sycamore trees. It has seen many respected and colourful characters as residents over the years, and even has a tale to tell with regards the famous author J.M .Barrie. As mentioned above, its stories led it to be recently featured in the BBC Scotland’s, ‘A House with a Past’ Show, but you can find out more on your arrival!
The Bower Old Free Church Manse offers 2 beautiful Bed & Breakfast suites with private bathrooms within the main house.
Our generous accommodation features many traditional features such as solid wooden floors, flagstone hallway, stove fire, shuttered Georgian windows, and even an inherited piano (albeit out of tune!) . It all goes to create a fabulous Highland ambiance.
This taste of the old is complemented by a superb modern home entertainment systems comprising a large flat-screen Satelite TV, as well as FREE WiFi so you’ll be well entertained on an evening should the weather have a ‘Fling’!
A full Scottish breakfast is prepared using as much local produce as is available in our main kitchen, and is served to you in our beautifukl dining room, or your room so you can be assured of your privacy. Alternatively, guests are more than welcome to dine within the garden should they so wish, indeed during the summer months this can be quite wonderful as you get to experience all the sounds of nature surrounding this peaceful spot; and don’t forget to venture out as evening falls, when our resident pipistrelle bats put on a quite dazzling acrobatic display!
We of course offer vegetarian variations on the main breakfast, toast with delicious preserves, and the usual range of cereals and fruit juices. Just let us know in advance if you have any special dietary requirements, and we’ll do our very best to assist you.
