THE GRIFFIN BAR

THE GRIFFIN BAR Image

The Griffin is a Traditional Glasgow Public House – with a contemporary feel.

Built in 1903 The Griffin, known as The King’s Arms up until 1969, sits proudly on the corner of Bath Street and Elmbank Street

It was built in the same year as The Kings Theatre opposite, and the two have seen the passing of over a century together.

The Griffin is a “B” listed building and retains much of the original wooden interior, window panels and lead work. The main bar has a beautiful tiled floor, and the fixed seating has had all leather renewed.

Seemingly, everyone in Glasgow has had a drink or two in The Griffin. It has seen many eras and had many guises.
During the seventies and eighties it gave us pie beans and a pint, and was also a live music venue of note. A pub for everybody, old young rich and poor, this really is the original everyman bar.

Nowadays The Griffin still has that people quality. Refurbished in 2008 and under new ownership, the atmosphere tells you that you’re in safe hands. The growing number of customers is testimony to The Griffin’s enduring and ongoing appeal.

If you want a traditional Glasgow Pub with a relaxed atmosphere, great food and drink but with absolutely no pretension, then The Griffin Bar is for you.

Today The Griffin provides a much-needed “local” in the city centre. – No gimmicks here. The atmosphere is relaxed. The staff want to look after you, and both the food and drink selections are great.

The menu does not try to be too clever. It has old Scottish pub favourites, alongside some more international dishes.

It would not be unusual for one person to order a Mince and Tatties, whilst their partner has the beautifully aromatic Thai Chicken. – But that is The Griffin – Universal and for everyone.

The desserts are baked in house and the recipe for The Sticky Toffee Pudding remains a closely guarded secret. (ish)

Children are catered for in an understanding way. All the food is cooked fresh and with care. The menu has been translated into several other languages.

It goes without saying that a city centre Glasgow Pub would stock just about every type of spirit, liqueur and bourbon. On top of that The Griffin has a large selection of Whisky.

Blends, Malts and speciality whiskies prevail. A visitor could perhaps travel around Scotland in one afternoon without having to leave their seat.

There are Real Ales, Heavies, Guinness and continental lagers, not to mention the one and only “Big Red T” – Tennents Lager. The bottled beer range has something for every pallet including the local favourite Heather Ale.

The latest addition to the drinks line up is the freshly squeezed Orange Juice – courtesy of the “Zummo” machine. Absolutely fantastic – recommended with your breakfast, early lunch or perhaps with a vodka at teatime.

The atmosphere is so good at The Griffin. The music is always varied and never played too loud. There is live Jazz at The Griffin most weekends and some local and not so local acoustic acts have booked for summer 2009.

Finally, for those visitors who wish to keep in touch, not only with their friends and colleagues but also with what is going on in the wider world, The Griffin has free wireless internet access.

The Griffin looks forward to welcoming you...
