Scottish Opera

As Scotland's national opera company, Scottish Opera is committed to bringing the widest range of opera, performed to highest standards, to the maximum audience throughout the country with one of the busiest touring calandars in the opera world. The company's touring productions can range in scale from intimate chamber performances to grand traditional productions - employing upward of 200 singers, stagecrew, costume and wig makers, props and set builders, lighting and sound teams, the Orchestra of Scottish Opera and more. Smaller tours head out on the road with a reduced cast and orchestra - or simple piano accompaniment - enabling the company's skilled and versatile teams of soloists, musicians and technicians to reveal the magic of opera in the tiniest of local halls, in towns and villages across the length and breadth of the nation. For the latest "What's On" information, please visit Scottish Opera online.

Scottish Opera believes that opera is for all, able to move audiences young and old through romanticism, drama and the world's greatest music.

The company has the longest - running established education and outreach unit of any opera house in Europe, with an incredible year round programme of education activity for all age groups, specifically targeteted groups ( for example, children and adults with special needs) and curriculum based activities provided for primary schools in scotland's thirty-two local authorities.

Notable artistic acheivements include: 1971's Scottish opera production of Wagner's Ring Cycle at the King's Theatre, Glasgow; 2003's five complete performances of the Ring Cycle (for which the Company was awarded the South Bank Show Award for Best Opera) at Edinburgh International Festival, Theatre Royal Glasgow and the Lowry, Salford Quays; and world premiers of Scottish composer Judith Weir's opera The Vanishing Bridegroom and James MacMillan's opera Ines de Castro at the Edinburgh International Festival.
