Fife and Angus Golf Tour - Day 2
The East Neuk: Elie and Crail
Travelling east along the coast of the Firth of Forth, we head into the charming corner of Fife known as 'The East Neuk'.
Master golf course architect James Braid was born nearby and learnt to play his golf on Elie links. Today it is one of Scotland's most charming seaside courses and hugely popular with visitors. Look out for the World War II submarine periscope is an unusual feature and used by the starters to make sure the first fairway, which rises over a hill, is clear for players to play their first tee shots.
The delightful little Balcomie Links in the old burgh of Crail is one of Scotlands finest golfing treasures. There is great antiquity here: the Crail Golfing Society was founded in 1786, at a time when there were only six other golf clubs in existence anywhere in the world. Set on the exposed promontory of Fife Ness, the present course remains much as it did after Old Tom Morris from St Andrews laid out the first nine holes in 1895 and then added a second nine four years later.
There are lots of good places to stay around this part of the tour. You could base yourself here for the first two days of the tour - there are many lovely places such as Elie, St. Monan's, Pittenweem and Anstruther. Make sure you try a fish n' chips on the front while you're here!
