Fife and Angus Golf Tour - Day 4

Monifieth golf course

A mighty triumvirate: Monifieth, Carnoustie and Panmure

There is proud golfing heritage here on the Angus coastline where Monifieth is the most westerly of the great triumvirate of majestic links courses with Panmure Barry and the mighty Carnoustie only four miles further on.

Big greens that are normally hard, fast and true and some very clever bunkering are the hallmarks of much-underrated Monifieth, home club of Scotland's finest ever amateur player, and a master of links golf, Ian Hutcheon.

There are many who believe that the medal course at Carnoustie is the finest test of championship golf to be found anywhere the game is played. Allan Robertson, the first player to break 80 around the Old Course at St Andrews and now recognised as the games first professional golfer, was the man who laid out the original course back in the middle of the 19th century, but five-times Open Champion James Braid revamped the course in 1926.
Tommy Armour, Sir Henry Cotton, Gary Player, Tom Watson and Ben Hogan have all won the Open Championship here. It returns to Carnoustie in 2007.

The original Panmure Golf Club shared the links of Monifieth - but congestion on the course forced the move to its present location at Barry, close to the Angus coast.
