Palms, Poets & Pilgrims - Day 2

Two walkers sit reading a map in Glentrool, the Galloway Forest Park

A day in the park

On day two of our tour we head south through Girvan and turn inland towards Newton Stewart, into wilder country stopping at Glentrool for a foray into the Galloway Forest Park, Britain's largest forest park, which stretches all the way from the southern part of Ayrshire right down to Gatehouse of Fleet. The park consists largely of glassy lochs, wooded hills and bare, rounded peaks, and is a major draw for hikers and mountain bikers, who are both well-catered for with lots of trails clearly marked out.

Be sure to stop in the pleasant market town of Newton Stewart for lunch, or if you spend the day in the Park, which is easily done, stop for the night in Newton Stewart or New Galloway - both feasible to use as bases for exploring the park
