James Rizza & Sons Ltd

In 1914 James and his brother Dominic opened their first business a few miles up the road in Keith. This however was briefly interrupted by the first world war. In 1919 James opened a confectionery and ice cream shop in Aberdeen and in the late 1920's Dominic opened his own confectionery shop in Huntly. Around this time James moved to the seaside resort of Banff. Here he installed one of the first soda fountains in the north of Scotland. Sadly, fire devastated this shop and James came to join his brother in the Huntly business.
In the mid 1960's the family firm moved up a gear and opened a wholesale ice cream business, investing in premises in Upperkirkgate where they stayed for the next 30 years.
James Rizza & Sons first began manufacturing ice cream to a traditional Italian recipe in the 1930's and today they are still making ice cream in these purpose built premises in Huntly.
The technique of making a custard based ice cream using egg yolks originated in France around the middle of the 18th century and was a closely guarded secret.
The mixture is simply cooled and churned to product a smooth even texture. Whilst the methods of preparing the ice cream have barely changed, as you can see at the viewing galleries modern manufacturing methods and technology have made it possible for many more people to enjoy this unique taste and texture.
In addition to our Italian recipe ice creams and sorbets we also make a prize winning gold top premium ice cream using Jersey double cream. Our real dairy ice cream is made using cream supplied to us by a local dairy. James Rizza & Sons are members of Ice Cream World and our product is delivered to ice cream parlours, hospitals, restaurants and many other outlets throughout the North East Scotland, the Highlands, Dundee and Tayside.
