Durisdeer Parish Church

Church of Scotland
Unspoilt, peaceful, Georgian country parish church, rebuilt 1716, topped by a belfry tower. X-plan, one arm of the cross is taller and more sophisticated, built for the Duke of Queensberry and remaining from the earlier church. Inside is the most amazing monument over the Queensberry burial vault, a baroque baldacchino carved in 1695 by John van Nost to the design of James Smith who was also architect of the later church. There are few buildings in which baroque magnificence and presbyterian decency are so happily combined (George Hay, Architecture of Scottish Post-Reformation Churches). Martyrs Grave 1685. One mile east of A702 (sign posted).
