Portnahaven is an attractive settlement at the tip of the Rinns of Islay.
Portnahaven is a pretty fishing and crofting settlement situated seven miles along the coastal road from Port Charlotte. The whitewashed cottages, wrapped around a deep bay, have been here since the early 19th century. Seals lounge on the rocks out in the bay, while further out are two islands. The larger is Orsay, which sports the Rhinns of Islay Lighthouse, built by Robert Louis Stevenson’s father in 1825. Also of interest is Islay’s wave energy generator, named ‘Limpet 500’, which is found just north of Portnahaven.
