Lairg

A road sign warns for deer in Sutherland near Lairg; two cyclists head into the distance

Information enquiry

Lairg is a transport hub at the gateway to the wild country of Sutherland.

North of Bonar Bridge, the A836 parallels the River Shin for eleven miles to Lairg, at the eastern end of Loch Shin. The Ferrycroft Countryside Centre and tourist office, on the west side of the river, has a free display on the woodlands and history of the area; its also the starting-point for forest walks and an archeological trail to Ord Hill.

Four miles south of Lairg, on the opposite side of the river, the Falls of Shin is one of the best places in Scotland to see salmon leaping on their upstream migration. The season for salmon returning to spawn is from June to September. Every August, Lairg hosts an annual lamb sale, the biggest one-day livestock market in Europe, when sheep from all over the north of Scotland are bought and sold.
