Cawdor

A floodlit Cawdor Castle at night

Information enquiry

Cawdor is a pretty village famous for its association with Shakespeare's Macbeth.

The village of Cawdor lies five miles south-west of Nairn and eight miles of east of Culloden. Cawdor Castle is synonomous with Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth: the witches predict that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor, which sets off his desire to be king.

Despite it being highly unlikely that the grisly events on which Macbeth was based took place here, the 14th century castle is a popular attraction. Visitors will marvel at its restored fairy-tale towers, turrets, gargoyles and hidden passageways. The grounds boast a maze, golf course, walled garden and nature trails. The Campbells of Cawdor spend the winter here, but the castle and grounds are open from May to mid-October.
