Bothwell
Located between Uddingston and Hamilton, Bothwell has had a long and often dramatic history.
To the west of this small town stands the substantial ruins of Bothwell Castle, now administered by Historic Scotland. The castle was a stronghold of the powerful Moray and Douglas families and dates from the 13th century. One of the castle's most striking feature is the massive Great Donjon or round tower.
At the other side of the town, the bridge over the Clyde was the scene of a major battle in 1679 between Royalists and Covenanters. A monument commemorating the Covernanter's defeat stands near to the bridge.
The rich countryside around the town and along the banks of the Clyde provides excellent walks.
