East Kilbride was redeveloped in the 1950s and '60s from a small rural village to become Scotland's 6th largest town and the country's most succesful New Town.

East Kilbride's town centre boasts the largest indoor shopping area in Scotland comprising six different interlinked malls and has just begun a major 10-year redevelopment which will see the creation of a landmark arts and culture complex with a 1,000-seat theatre, a 500-seat conference centre, a museum and a new town square.

The town also boasts excellent sporting and recreational facilites including golf courses, sports centres, ice rink and aqua centre. For nature lovers, Calderglen Coutry Park provides a range of walks through atrractive woodlands while the National Museum of Rural Life at Kittochside, part of the National Museums of Scotland, allows visitors to escape to the country to take in the sights, smells and sounds of a 1950s working farm, complete with dairy cows and sheep.
