Bearsden

Information enquiry

Bearsden is a genteel commuter suburb, situated about 6 miles northwest of Glasgow city centre.

The first recorded settlement of the area can be dated back to the Roman period when a fort was built here as a staging post on the Antonine Wall, the northernmost limit of the mighty Roman Empire. Little can now be seen of either the wall or the fort but the well-preserved remains of a bath house from the same period lie close to the town centre.

The modern town began as a small hamlet in the 17th century but expanded greatly in the 19th as wealthy Glaswegian businessmen began to relocate to the city's periphery in search of a less polluted, and more refined standard of living. Today, Bearsden is still regarded as a very desirable place to stay, recently being ranked as the 7th richest area in the UK.
