Whalsay

Information enquiry

The 'Bonnie Isle' of Whalsay is 25 minutes by ferry off the east coast of Shetland.

Whalsay's heritage is rooted in fishing, which is a multi-million pound industry for the islanders. The harbour, at the island's main town, Symbister, is crammed with fishing boats and pleasure craft.

The island is steeped in history, with important archaeological sites, a Hanseatic League museum and the finest Georgian mansion in Shetland. A wealth of birds, seals and wildflowers thrive and visitors are welcome to try a round of golf on Britain's most northerly course. Also, celebrated Scots poet Hugh MacDiarmid stayed here from 1933 to 1942.
