Dounby

Dounby on Mainland Orkney is close to the famous pre-historic village of Skara Brae.
Dounby lies north of the Loch of Harray, 14 miles north-west of Kirkwall. It boasts a market.
Nearby at Sandwick is the neolithic village of Skara Brae - the best-known of Orkney's pre-historic monuments. The extensive remains of a Neolithic fishing and farming village, Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm removed much of the dunes that covered it. The village is very well preserved, its houses huddled together and connected by passageways. There is a visitor centre, with exhibition at the site, which lies beside a cracking beach at Bay of Skaill.
