Scalpay

Bridge linking the island of Scalpay to Harris

Information enquiry

The island of Scalpay is connected to Harris via a single track bridge. Being a close-knit community, on this 2.5sq mile island, it is easy to experience Hebridean culture at its best.

With a population of around 300, the majority of islanders speak Gaelic and have grown up in the shadow of the fishing industry which is the main stay of the island.
Eilean Glas, which can be found on a small peninsula to the eastern shore of the island is home to the first lighthouse to be built in the Outer Hebrides. The island has quite a number of lochans, the largest of these being Loch an Duin (Loch of the fort) which has a small island on which can be seen the remains of the fort.

Scalpay is a popular location for diving, walking and relaxing.
