Bernera

Overlooking Loch Roag to Bernera

Information enquiry

Bernera, officially known as Great Bernera, is a rocky island off the north west coast of Lewis, joined to the mainland by a narrow bridge that spans a small sea channel.

Bernera is dotted with lochans and fringed by a few small lobster-fishing settlements and in 1872 was the stage for a crofter's land revolt that has an important place in Lewis history. A stone-built cairn now stands as a memorial to the riot, at the crossroads beyond the central settlement of Breacleit. The island has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times and there are various historical and archeological sites worth visiting.

Great Bernera is ideal for walking, fishing and birdwatching. If the weather's fine and you climb to the top of the hillsn above Bostadh, you should get a good view over the forty or so islands in Loch Roag, and maybe even the Flannan Isles on the horizon.

It is also ideally placed to explore the scenic and historic district of Uig, or the west-side loop of Lewis that includes the world-famous standing stones at Callanish, and the Arnol Blackhouse.
