The Hugh McDiarmid Memorial near Langholm

Information enquiry

The town of Langholm, on the road north into the Borders, was the birthplace of poet Hugh McDiarmid.

Hugh McDiarmid (1872-1978), perhaps the greatest modern Scottish poet, was born in Langholm. You can follow the McDiarmid Trail to the McDiarmid Memorial. A further claim to fame is the Langholm Town Band - reputedly the oldest brass band in Scotland.

The River Esk, which flows through Langholm, is one of Scotland's greatest salmon rivers. Permits are available for game fishing on the River Esk. The area provides excellent walking with waymarked routes reaching out to the hills from the town centre.
