Stranraer

A fountain, palm trees and stone houses in the town of Stranraer

Information enquiry

Stranraer is situated on Loch Ryan at the far south-western tip of Scotland, in Dumfries and Galloway.

Stranraer is probably best known for its history as a ferry port, which served passengers from Belfast for over 100 years.

Stranraer's top attraction is the Castle of St. John, a ruined four-story tower house built around 1500, which sits on a green in the main street. There is also the town museum. Three miles east of Stranraer are Castle Kennedy Gardens, with the castle, two lochs, a giant lily pond and an avenue of monkey puzzle trees.
