Stranraer

A fountain, palm trees and stone houses in the town of Stranraer

Information enquiry

Stranraer is probably best known for its ferry port, serving Belfast in Northern Ireland.

Stranraer is situated on Loch Ryan at the far south-western tip of Scotland, in Dumfries and Galloway. It is the departure point for ferries to Belfast, while the nearby port of Cairnryan serves Larne, also in Northern Ireland.

Stranraer's top attraction is the Castle of St. John, a ruined four-story tower house built around 1500, which sits on a green in the main street. There is also the town museum. Three miles east of Stranraer are Castle Kennedy Gardens, with the castle, two lochs, a giant lily pond and an avenue of monkey puzzle trees.
