Dysart
On the eastern edge of Kirkcaldy lies the old suburb of Dysart.
Tall ships once arrived at Dysart, bringing cargo from the Netherlands, setting off again with coal, beer, salt and fish. Well restored, and retaining historic street names such as Hot Pot Wynd (after the hot pans used for salt evaporation), it's an atmospheric place of narrow alleyways and picturesque old buildings.
In Rectory Lane, the birthplace of John McDouall Stuart (who in 1862 became the first man to cross Australia from south to north) now holds the John McDouall Stuart Museum, giving an account of his emigration to Australia in 1838 and his subsequent adventures.
