Cairngorms National Park - Images
The Cairngorms were made a national park in September 2003 because it is a unique and special place that needs to be cared for - both for the wildlife and countryside it contains and for the people that live in it, manage it and visit it. It is Britain's largest national park.
The mountains that give the park its name have shaped the people, culture, natural heritage, scenery and character of the area and dominate the National Park.
There are so may ways to get out and enjoy the National Park that its difficult to know where to start. Here windsurfers take to Loch Morlich at the watersports centre near Aviemore.
For most people, winter in the Cairngorms means one thing - fun in the snow, be it skiing, snowboarding or sledging.
The funicular railway which runs for over a mile up Cairn Gorm is a fantastic way to experience the high peaks, regardless of the weather or the season. Take the funicular up to the Ptarmigan Restaurant, nestling just under the summit of the mountain and enjoy the spectacular panoramic views from its terrace.
A sled dog ride through the forest tracks is one of the most exhilarating ways to enjoy the Park. Wheeled sleds mean you can enjoy the experience all year round.
The Park is ideal for families and has lots to keep kids entertained, as here at the Landmark Visitor Centre at Carrbridge.
Aviemore is one of the most popular destinations in the Park and makes an ideal base from which to explore it ...
... but for many, the sense of 'getting-away-from-it-all' is also a major reason why people come here.
