What to see and do

West End

the stylish and highly respected Dundee Contemporary Arts building

Information enquiry

Immediately west of the city centre, High Street becomes Nethergate and passes into what is now being dubbed, with a fair amount of justification, Dundees 'Cultural Quarter'.

Principal among the area's many arts venues is the hip and exciting DCA, or Dundee Contemporary Arts, at 152 Nethergate, a stunningly designed centre which incorporates galleries, a print studio and an airy café-bar. The centre, a converted old brick building which had prviously been a garage and car showroom, is an inspiring space, given energy and confidence by its bright, sleek interior and distinctive ship-like exterior. It's worth visiting for its stimulating temporary and touring exhibitions of contemporary art and its eclectic programme of arthouse films and cult classics.

Right at the heart of the Cultural Quarter on Tay Square, north of Nethergate, is the prodigious Dundee Repertory Theatre, an excellent place for indigenously produced contemporary theatre and the home of the only permanent repertory company in Scotland.

Tucked in behind the DCA is the Sensation Science Centre, a great attraction aimed squarely at families and schoolchildren. It's a fun-packed exploration of the world of science, using some sixty different interactive exhibits and participatory experiments.

The Quarter is also home to the best concentration of pubs and cafés in the city.
