Carstairs
Carstairs is a small village lying 4 miles east of Lanark.
The Romans were active in this area and Carstairs was an important junction on military routes to London, Lanark and Ayr. The site of a Roman fort can be found just a mile to the south east of the village.
The pre-Reformation bishops of Glasgow once maintained a castle here and in its church, now the Parish Church, is preserved an interesting cruicifixion stone dating from the 15th century.
