Bressay and Noss

Bressay lies opposite Lerwick, from where it is just ten minutes by ferry. Noss, off the east coast of Bressay, is a paradise for nesting birds.
Bressay, with a population about 400, is situated a little offshore from Lerwick, protecting it from the open sea. Tiny Noss, now uninhabited, lies just off the east of Bressay.
Both Bressay and Noss have spectacular features including geology, landscape, wild flowers and birdlife. The cliffs at Noup Head on Noss are 500ft high and home to a colossal colony of nesting seabirds. Noss is home to Shetland ponies, and many great skuas, or Bonxies - fearsome birds that dive bomb you if you wander too close to their nests.
