Fair Isle

Fair Isle is a small island between Orkney and Shetland famed for knitted sweaters and birds, birds, birds.
Fair Isle is a dot in the ocean, just three miles long by one-and-a-half wide, three hours by ferry south of the southern tip of Shetland. Dizzying cliffs, moors, crofting land, geos (indents in the cliffs) and beaches make up this wee, beautiful and spectacular island.
The name Fair Isle is perhaps most synonymous with knitwear, but to bird-watchers it is their nirvana. Around 360 species of birds have been recorded, including several seen for the first time in Britain. Seabirds pack the cliffs in summer, while spring and autumn are the best times for rare birds to turn up, with a peak in September.
