Moffat

The town of Moffat with hills of the Borders behind

Information enquiry

Moffat is a small historical spa town located in the Annandale Valley.

Moffat is situated 21 miles from Dumfries and 54 miles from Edinburgh, close to the M74. It has a wide tree-lined high street, which retains much of its original characteristics. The town has very strong connections both with the Moffat and Johnstone clans.

A predominantly sheep farming town in years gone past, this history is depicted by the Ram Statue on the high street. A large depression in the ground to the north of the town (Devil's Beef Tub) aided the many sheep and cattle rustlers who operated in the area as it allowed them a place to hide their animals before moving them on. Moffat was also a spa town until 1921, when the Hydropathic Hotel burnt to the ground.

The surrounding hills and the local stage of the Southern Upland Way provide excellent walking. Also, the River Annan has good fishing stocks.
