The Mackintosh Church - Queens Cross
The Mackintosh Church at Queen's Cross is one of Glasgow's hidden architectural gems.
The only church built to Charles Rennie Mackintosh's design. A must see for Mackintosh fans. Designed in 1896. for the Free Church the simplicity of the design is inspiring. The windows are Gothic in character, yet are infused with the Mackintosh spirit, and the floral motifs he affected can be easily recognised, particularly on the tracery of the large western windows above the chancel.
Inside, the Art Nouveau influence is visible in the detailing of the oak pulpit. The motif, repeated five times round its curved front, seems to show a bird's wings embracing and protecting young plant shoots; perhaps these are the seed which was sown on fertile ground. Echoes of the parable of the sower, which comes from St Matthew's gospel, abound in the church.
In 1999 The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society became owner and long-term custodian of the Mackintosh Church at Queens Cross. The Society is an independent charity established in 1973 to promote and encourage awareness of the Mackintosh legacy. Membership of the Society provides an opportunity to share in the ownership of an original work by Mackintosh as well as other benefits.
Tours of the Mackintosh properties are regularly organised in and around Glasgow and they can be arranged and tailored to suit individual or group requirements.
The Mackintosh Church has an excellent cafe, library and the shop stocks an extensive range of Mackintosh books and gifts.
