Ben Lui

Ben Lui

Located east of Dalmally and above Glen Lochy, this peak rises to a height of 1130m (3707 feet). In profile, it is of classic mountain form with five ridges which radiate outward to produce four corries. The summit is found where the ridges meet. The north east corrie, Coire Gaothaich, is worth particular mention since it holds snow from mid winter to early summer. The name Beinn Laoigh originates from Gaelic and means "hill of the calf".

The four high peaks of this reserve attract both walkers and naturalists. Moist cliffs and rocky outcrops support an unusually lush growth of mountain plants, thriving on soils that are less acid than elsewhere. Look out especially for beautiful saxifrages in the rich carpets of mosses and lichens.
