Provost Skene's House

Provost Skene's House Image

Dating from 1545, Provost Skene's House now houses an attractive series of period rooms, furnished to show how people lived in the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. Visitors can admire an unusual series of religious paintings in the Painted Gallery and enjoy changing displays of dress in the Costume Gallery.

Built in the 16th century, Provost Skene's House is one of Aberdeen's few remaining examples of early burgh architecture. The building has been altered several times, particularly in the 17th. In the 1930s the adjacent houses were demolished, but Provost Skene's House was saved and the interior refurbished.
The atmosphere of the 17th century is recreated in the Great Hall, Parlour and Bedroom with furnishings and paintings of the period. This contrasts with the refined style of the 18th century Dining Room and Bedroom.
The 17th century Tea Room offers a variety of snacks, small meals and traditional home bakes as well as wine and Fair Trade Costa Coffee.
