The Georgian House

The Georgian House

Situated in historic Charlotte Square, the Georgian House provides a glimpse of life in the New Town in the 18th centurty.

The Georgian House is part of Robert Adam's masterpiece of urban design, Charlotte Square. It dates from 1796, when those who could afford it began to escape from the cramped, squalid conditions of Edinburgh's Old Town to settle in the fashionable New Town.

The house's beautiful china, shining silver, exquisite paintings and furniture all reflect the domestic surroundings and social conditions of the times.

Visitors can contrast this site with Gladstone's Land, at the top of the Royal Mile, which provides a glimpse of life in the Old Town in the 17th-century.

The Georgian House is in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. Admission is free for members, for holders of the Edinburgh Pass and holders of the Great British Heritage Pass.
